Mona's style exudes tremendous vitality. Her art – mainly oils on canvas – is a powerful amalgam of line, color, form and texture, charged with resonating emotional energy. Line and color become in her compositions, expressive elements in their own right. Expanses of vivid red, black and white are her usual color frames within which strongly delineated forms move in their illuminations of subtly welded color.
We are visually moved by Mona's dramatic exploration of pictorial opposites – contrasts of dynamic and static elements; surging color forms and flat chequerboard areas; amorphous contours and geometrical shapes; broad fields of color and thin patterned lines; fine and thick textures. Explosions of color are fenced in boxes; or tied with strong squiggly lines.
Yet closer examination of her apparently abstract visuals, reveals that the artist never rejects the image – it is nascent yet powerful, poised between form and formlessness, struggling to break out of it's womb of color; an arched bird's neck in ‘Swan Lake', a sleekly stretched woman's form in ‘Flight under Water', a monumental horse head in ‘Surreal Animal', and a powerfully tender silhouette in ‘Mother and Child'.
Constantly experimenting, Mona uses texture with imagination – sometimes crafting her own grained paper – to add depth to her compositions. In her first figurative series, ‘Birds', intricate weaves and filigrees of powerful lines form themselves into mythic beings of pure imagination. Mobile in their expressiveness, they yet seem engraved into rough-textured backdrops of wood or rock, plumed creatures entombed in their prime, and fossilized in stone.
Spirit, emotion, senses and evolving creativity unite organically in Mona's art.
