Sk. Sahajahan's powerfully evocative expressionistic compositions are spontaneous free ranging explorations of the dualities he observes in the world around him. On the one hand, his images of human exploitation and social violence – represented through distortions of the human form – become symbols of the eternal reality of human suffering. On the other, a calming equilibrium may temper his perception of this same world, in which man and nature coexist in symbiotic harmony.

Distortions inherent in human circumstances can and do explode repeatedly through his canvas in waves of visionary anguish. Yet Sahajahan also believes that the seminal principle of all existence is balance – between creation and destruction, anarchy and harmony, pattern and chaos. This theme of self adjusting balance is compellingly imaged in a few canvases. It is integrated, as well, into his tempera works, 'Nature' and 'Man in Nature', where man's presence is woven into vivid perceptions of hills, rivers, lotuses and trees.

Sahajahan's compositions derive from his life's experiences, and from memories of a childhood spent in the rural confines of a village environment. The invisible imbalances that disfigure the inner life of small communities and thrust tentacles into the larger world frequently surface in his universally valid, potent images of human suffering, as do the mass episodes of communal and social violence that ravage the outer world.

Yet grimness is often muted by his nuanced awareness of all-containing nature, and of the infinite variety of life's complex, constantly renewing tapestry. Shades of darkness in a night sky; exquisite patterns of fine craftsmanship; a face or expression caught in memory; the potential for joy in human interaction; the reality underlying the façade of the seen; images and suggestions, jostle his imagination and transform into complex pictorial statements.

The powerful conceptualization of his stylized – sometimes fragmented – forms has been traced by critics to the modernist tradition of Picasso. While artists will inevitably assimilate influences from respected masters and mentors, Sahajahan's artistic oeuvre remains undeniably his own.

Meaningful organization of line and space, original experimentation with media and colors – including masterful manipulations of tempera – and use of symbolically charged forms, colors and images, converge into a singularly expressive personal vocabulary rooted in his own identity and traditions.
