Sovan's versatile talent exploits a wide range of traditional media – oils, acrylic, pastels, water color and mixed media. His style is distinguished by a dynamic use of powerfully coordinated colors. Dramatic orchestration of hard and soft colors and sensitive manipulation of a vibrant palette give depth and definition to his stylized compositions.

Gradations and contrasts of rich color impact with somber hues and subtle accents, to impart rhythmic vitality to the artist's vividly stylized almost emblematic figurations of man and animal posturing dramatically against flat planes of subtly shaded light and darkness. Occasionally, delicate touches intrude into his solid masses of form and color. Meticulous linear details, nuanced shadings of light and darkness, fragmentation of light into fine motes, fragile lines and ripples accenting the delicacy of a translucent wash of soft blue water that seems to flow gently over dense color forms, lend depth and a restrained grace to compositions like ‘Empathy' or ‘Bird Sellers'.

At the same time, strong sure lines and subtly calibrated definitions of space create a sense of structural solidity; and of definitively delineated formal areas that hold together and strengthen the artist's dramatically conceived and colored images.

The rural environment, in which the artist lives and works, reflects in his choice of imagery. Nature images figure persistently, often symbolically in his works. In his ‘Coexistence' series, the motifs of man and animal – charged with symbolic significance and sometimes with satirical overtones – recur in various moods, relationships and interdependencies in ‘Flight', ‘Play', ‘Empathy', ‘Power', ‘Lust', ‘Commerce', ‘Confrontation', ‘Sport', ‘Alliance', ‘Speed' and ‘Agriculture'.

Sovan also depicts animals and birds – whether in wilderness or farmyard contexts – with a wonderful sense of movement and vivacity.
