| SURAJIT CHAKRABORTY |
|
Senior artist Debabrata Chakrabarti refers to Surajit’s ‘mature handling of colour’, and the realism and brightness of his ‘vibrant water colours’. And his Principal at Art College and eminent artist Partha Pratim Deb comments, ‘Visually Surajit is shy, but his innermost power of perception, makes his work dominating and narrative … the expression of his ideas in his paintings of human figures in their environment, is always pleasing to look at…’
This ‘shyness’, or rather, restraint, is evident in the subtlety with which the young artist formulates space, expresses form and handles his palette of colours. Expanses of fragile monochrome are usually accented and anchored with minimal washes of vivid colour, and with slim lines, geometrical shapes and graphic markings. The artist’s nebulous cityscapes seem to float against a backdrop of understated yet luminous colour, which shimmers even as it soothes and recedes. Space is defined with minimalist forms, etched into the surface with an evocative economy of thin lines; which sometimes acquire a random, non-descriptive playfulness and combine with delicate arcs, arrows and triangles to build depth and focus into the composition.
Surajit’s nightscapes with their mystical chiaroscuros of shattering light, are depicted with similar delicacy; but there is here a more assertive realism in the depiction of form and in the hazed vibrancy of colours. And realism combines with power in his human figures – their postures portrayed with expressive strokes of pen and brush, and set against a background in which space is defined with spare lines and contrasting panels of colour.
