Chhatrapati Dutta is an artist whose creative expressions in media as varied as painting, sculpture, performance, and installation –are earning him eminence in art circles at home and abroad.
Violence, isolation, a dissolution of the security of fundamental assumptions and presumed realities and the dislocations following upon this, are symbolized through the artist’s choice of imagery; by the suggestion for example of a gun pointed to the head, or his persistent motif of the scissors, or of scattered books and printed words, strategically positioned to indicate an overcrowded –and shredded –mental environment.
Chhatrapati's paintings are taut, understated compositions, in which incisive symbolism, and a suggestive sobriety and subtlety of colors and textures create a mood that reinforces the totality of his statement.
