Gorachand’s abstract canvases – with their dynamic lines carving suggestions of form into masses of vibrantly juxtaposed color – have the visually explosive quality of a Kandinsky composition. Glowing patches of color flow freely beneath expressively configured lines – thin and thick, surging and staccato – to evoke from the viewer, a sensory and emotional response that is no way related to any representation of physical reality.
In his abstracted ‘Landscape’ series, trees and fields, grass and earth. huts, hill and road are defined by broad swathes of color anchored with lines, dots, triangles and the barest suggestions of form. His ‘Eruption’ sequence is simplified into smudged masses of volcanic red yellow and black thrust through with spinning, surging lines, and massed configurations of noisy geometric shapes – all suggesting upward and outward motion.
In realistic mode, Gorachand’s figures – whether a pair of egrets fighting for fish underwater, or a woman cradling a duck in the water – similarly convey, with their strong sweeping lines and dense strokes and daubs of powerful color, a potent dynamism and feeling of surging movement.
