| Malay Chandan Saha |

Daubs and swathes of vivid colour laid with broad masculine brushstrokes onto his surfaces, instill a rich ambience and happy vitality into this artist’s small-format, jewel-bright landscapes. Semi abstracted though they are, Malay’s suggestive compositions illustrate the descriptive possibilities of a sensitively wielded palette. Space and form are not merely defined, but acquire substance and evocative resonance from imaginative handling of pure chromatic hues and contrasts. Whether portraying the swirl and clarity of waves of bright water flanked by blue hills, the framing of dark silhouettes by the richness of a scarlet sunset or the sober rusticity of rocks and an unmanned boat nestled against the gaiety of a technicolor beach, the artist’s often geometrical application of color strokes, build depth and drama into his compositions.
Malay’s is a happy art, marvelous for the way it combines simplicity with emotion. He creates a born-again, pristine world of fresh colours, untainted by doubt and unclouded by indeterminate weather or the defacements and complexities of contemporary life. Yet here is no escapist’s vision, but rather the primal sensuous delight of a child in an unsullied, sun-lit world – an emotional antidote to our times, that can be as true and healing as it is universally applicable.
